Opinions, Please, Wise and All-Knowing Internets

Once upon a time, I submitted a little something I wrote to some online mom's thing (maybe a homeschooling bulletin board - remember those?). Several months ago, someone contacted me about publishing it in an e-zine for moms, and would I be interested? I said sure and promptly forgot.

Then I got this:

Hello, (My Real Name),

Would you please send me a bio for yourself – about 35 words long. You can include your marital status, where you live, number of children, any books you’ve written – but no personal websites nor blogs.

Thanks,
Online Publisher Lady

I've cleverly obscured the identifying details, but my first reaction was, "ACK! NO! I didn't mean it, I take it back and I'm scareder than a sinner in a cyclone."

And, of course, my next thought was, "I'll SO have to blog about this!"

Thoughts?

I wouldn't do it. In fact, I might say something like, "You give me yours and then I'll give you mine."

I looked at the site. Never heard of it. Poor quality pictures. No ads. Maybe nothing, but maybe a scam.

Print your thing here! We're reading! ;)

I'm so confused. I would have jumped at the chance, missing why you're scared. Then I read Grafted Branch's comment and I'm even more confused. The only thing that didn't seem right was not publishing where people can read you. What am I missing here? Not that people are banging on my blog asking to re-print things.

The key is "You can include..."

A simple bio would be:

(Real Name) is a wife and mom of 83 who loves to blog, eat peas and count dust bunnies under the bed. She resides in the distant recesses of her mind and likes it that way."

Something like that would satify the bio and nobody would know who you are.

I started writing & publishing the CWP almost 10 years ago when the internet was small. I'm me and that's that. Today do I wish I was anonymous? Yes & no. I couldn't do what I do if people didn't know who I am.

Rich & I trust God to keep all the wierdos at bay. He's been faithful and I expect him to remain that way. That's what Psalm 91 is all about.

I guess I'm with Linda. I'm not sure why you're unsure. It sounds like a neat opportunity! Congratulations, at any rate, whether you do it or not.

I would have normally said yes, but after what happened to Kathy Sierra, I don't know. I certainly wouldn't stop blogging, but I'm not in a forum where people would really notice me anyway. Just my 2 cents.

My first thought was, "You go girl!" Then I read the other comments,,,,,and now I'm hesitating! However, what's the harm? You won't be including your SS#, your telephone, address, weight! You are a gifted writer....write your bio creatively!

Whether you do it or not...I agree with another commentor...post your article here...we'll read it! And we won't even ask for your bio!

I wonder, is there a Better Business Bureau for E-zines?

O.k....I have to comment here because you turned off comments to your article above. THAT WAS FANTASTIC! So many great ideas, including navel-gazing. ;) You're quite the clever writer, aren't you? I'm appreciating the way your sharp wit shines through more with ever week.

I love the journaling idea especially.
